Słowacki Theatre in Cracow

Słowacki Theatre is one of the most popular and well known places in Krakow. It’s functioning continuously since it’s foundation in 1893. It is one of the most prominent and most commonly known stages in Poland.

The edifice was built by Jan Zawiejski and it is perceived as one of the most valuable theatre monuments in Europe. On the fronton there is an inscription that says “Krakow narodowej sztuce” and it means like “Krakow for the national art”. Interiors are decorated in frescos by the famous Viennese artist Anton Tuch. On the main stage, during intermissions, spectators have a chance to admire the famous curtain created by Henryk Siemiradzki. Next to the stage there is monumental dressing-room of the polish great actor Ludwik Solski. Since its beginning, the Theatre played the role of the national stage. It was the birthplace of polish production, stage design, staging and acting. This is the place where the epoch of Młoda Polska made their debuts. One of them and also one of the most important artists of that time was Stanisław Wyspiański. Premieres of his two most famous plays “Wesele” (1901) and “Wyzwolenie” (1903) in the Słowacki Teatre still belongs to one of the most important events in Polish culture.

Słowacki Theatre has a special place not only in Polish history but above all in Polish art and culture. This is almost obligatory for tourists that come to Krakow to see this place.
